STRENGTH IN STILLNESS

With everything happening around us, from endless streams of ads to the noise of the street outside, to the information being fed to us through digital devices, it can be difficult to find the time or space to quietly relax. Stillness focuses on cultivating calmness physically, mentally, and spiritually. Much like mindfulness, stillness urges you to be present in the moment, to take some time for yourself and enjoy it. Use the time to do… nothing. Nothing but be present in your mind and body.
Stillness helps you maintain perspective, recharge when you need it, and stay connected to your inner self.
Practicing physical stillness could mean slowing down, such as walking at a slower pace or even lying down. Lowering the intensity of lights and music could also help decrease sensory disturbance and increase relaxation. Taking deep breaths calms your nerves and lowers your heart rate. You could also shut your eyes to self reflect or calm your thoughts. Stillness can be done in silence as well, just to take time away from all the noise of the world. However, if thoughts become too loud or the silence becomes deafening, soft music is a good solution. Spiritual and mental stillness could be developing a strong moral compass. Reflect on your actions and see if they fall in line with your personal values. Be in touch with what you think is right and wrong. You could also choose to focus on yourself instead of thinking about other people; jealousy and envy would get you nowhere. Practice gratitude and be present in the small things that bring you joy, be it the weight of a comfortable blanket against your body, or the pleasure of being with friends.
What’s important about stillness is that you practice it when you need it.
PsychCentral’s article on stillness says that even if you’re at work, don’t be afraid to put up a little “Do not disturb” sign just to take a few moments to yourself. You could also schedule stillness. Dedicate a time of the day to just do nothing but relax your mind and body. Stillness can be done anywhere, but doing it at a favorite place (perhaps a certain room, or on a park bench, or on a walk) could add a sense of the time being yours and being special.
There is no right or wrong way to practice stillness. Do what’s best for you, and the calming effects will find you in time.
