Have you been experiencing brain fog recently? Brain fog is defined as experiencing symptoms of forgetfulness, sluggishness, confusion, and lack of mental clarity and focus. Let’s discuss the root causes of brain fog and find ways to help clear up brain fog so you can feel alert and on top of your game!

There are various factors that cause feelings of brain fog, so it is not a one size fits all cause and cure.

Hormonal changes like menopause and pregnancy can cause brain fog because estrogen levels impact memory performance.

Food is fuel, so if you are not consuming a well-rounded diet, it can cause brain fog. Deficiencies in Vitamin B12 and Iron can cause anemia, which alters energy levels and cognitive performance. Food allergies and sensitivities that aren’t avoided can also cause brain fog. Eat a well-rounded diet rich in vitamins and minerals to avoid brain fog, and steer away from any food allergies or sensitivities that you have.

Medications and other treatments can have side effects of brain fog. Common medications that cause brain fog are medications used to treat anxiety, depression, seizures, pain, overactive bladders, insomnia, and allergies. Chemotherapy commonly induces feelings of brain fog as well. If you’re experiencing brain fog from medications or treatments, tell your doctor and physician, and they can work to ease your symptoms by changing dosages, changing the medication, or recommending ways to ease the brain symptoms that the medication causes.

Brain fog can also be an underlying symptom of certain medical conditions. Brain fog is associated with multiple medical conditions like POTS, long COVID-19, diabetes, depression, anxiety, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, celiac disease, lupus, and hypothyroidism.

Going to a doctor and getting a treatment plan for these medical conditions can help ease brain fog symptoms.

Living a healthy lifestyle is the recommended treatment for preventing brain fog. A healthy lifestyle includes exercising regularly, getting adequate sleep, eating a healthy diet rich in antioxidants, managing stress levels, moderating caffeine and alcohol consumption, and being social with your friends and family.

You deserve to feel your best! Use these tips to beat the fog and regain your alertness, memory, and energy.
