Since the Tupac movie hit theaters, it has left us feelin’ some type of way. As if the 90s wasn’t having enough of a moment, all eyes are on the decades beauty looks reinvented. Feeling nostalgic and missing our brown lip liners and scrunchy hair, we decided to round up some of the quintessential 90’s beauty looks that will never die. Although they might not be dead to us, they definitley needed a modern twist. So we have taken some of our favorite 90’s beauty hacks and updated them for present day. 'Pac would be proud. Check out our updated looks that we love to hate.
1 BLUE EYESHADOW < BLUE EYELINER
In retrospect, full-on blue eyeshadow was admittedly aggressive. The look was a cross between a swollen black eye and a little girl who'd snuck into her mother's vanity. The updated, chic version? A swipe of royal blue eyeliner along the top lid only. All of the playfulness, none of the excess. Add a pop of bright blue mascara if you are feeling extra adventurous!
2 TENDRILS < HAIR TUCK
Tendrils were all but required for every '90s updo, but now they're downright dated (unless you're Kendall Jenner). Part of what made them so appealing back in the day was that they had an air of effortlessness; you can achieve a similar but far less old-school vibe today with the hair tuck. If you have face-framing layers, let them hang free by tucking the rest of your hair into a turtleneck. You'll get the same delicate, laid-back feel—with pretty much no effort.
3 THICK WHITE FRENCH TIP< THIN COLORFUL TIPS
French tips ruled the '90s. Chunky white blocks of paint were all the rage. Shudder. Now? Not so much. The design can be reimagined and made cool again, however, if you keep the line superskinny and choose a rainbow-bright polish color, it makes the manicure a little cheeky and unexpected. Exhibit A: the pops of green at Monique Lhuillier'sSS16 show. Oh, and black is cool, too. Because it's black.
4 GLOSSY BROWN LIPSTICK < MATTE BROWN LIPSTICK
Unless you've been living sans Internet access for the past five years, you know that brown lipstick is back, thanks in large part to Kylie Jenner. Between her Lip Kit and cult favorites from brands like Anastasia Beverly Hills and NYX, there are plenty of options. To update the look, go matte instead of glossy.
5 BODY GLITTER < BROW GLITTER
Body glitter was acceptable for Britney Spears in the '90s because it was Britney Spears in the '90s. That trend is dead and gone, but thick stripes of sparkle on the eye popped up multiple times this season at fashion week. Dries Van Noten, Creatures of the Wind, and Giambattista Valli endorsed the look, so although it's not the most subtle thing in the world, it's totally cool.
6 SCRUNCHY HAIR < BEACH HAIR
How was crunchy ramen-noodle hair ever a thing? Damn you, Justin Timberlake. (Just kidding. Love you 4eva, JT.) The modern equivalent is a much more relaxed, natural, beachy version. Key word here: natural. If you use a salt spray or texturizer and stay far away from gel, you should be good.
